The Entertainment Software Association of Canada (ESAC) welcomes the Government of Canada’s efforts to bring in a digital economy strategy that will support the future development of creative digital sectors in Canada such as the growing video game industry.
“We applaud government for moving forward on the digital economy strategy,” said Jayson Hilchie, President of ESAC. “Although the full details of this initiative have not yet been released, we are pleased that the government recognizes that a strategic approach to the development of our digital economy is necessary for the future,” he added. “Ensuring that Canada is well-positioned to compete in digital industries is critically important to our long-term economic prosperity.”
The Canadian video game industry is already a critical component of Canada’s digital economy. The sector – the world’s largest per capita – already contributes $2.3 billion to Canada’s economy and employs 16,500 young Canadians across the country. Canada’s video game industry provides a great example of the types of high-skill, knowledge intensive and innovative industries that need to be encouraged through strategic initiatives and targeted measures.
